Working Holiday Scheme New Zealand
March 26th, 2007 by bunnysuitOkay. I’ve had so many people asking me the same questions; I decided to post the FAQ here:
Q1. How to be eligible?
You must:
have a Malaysian passport that‘s valid for at least three months after your planned departure from New Zealand
be at least 18 and not more than 30 years old
not bring children with you
hold a return ticket or sufficient funds to purchase such a ticket*
have a minimum of NZ$2,250 available funds to meet your living costs while you’re here
meet health and character requirements (that’s not have TB or criminal records)
not have been approved a visa permit under a Working Holiday Scheme before.
*U are required to hold sufficient funds for the duration of your visit and for the purchase of an outward ticket from NZ. Such evidence may be requested on arrival at the border.
Q2. Where to apply?
Apply online at http://www.immigration.govt.nz
You have to have a credit card to pay for the application fee of NZ$120.00.
Q3. Is it easy to find the place to stay?
Accommodation is EVERYWHERE. The question is how much you’re willing to spend on it. We’re staying at friend’s house. So it’s a lot cheaper. We’re paying 70 kiwi dollars a week. And even the newspapers have a lot of advertisements of people trying to find flat mates. So worse comes to worst, you can crash into backpackers for the first few days until you find a flat/apartment. Backpacking is about 20 to 30 kiwi dollars a night.
Q4. How much is the rental? Need to pay deposit?
On average, a studio (like a room with bed, closet, kitchen, bathroom and wash machine ensuite) is about 120 to 160 kiwi dollars a week. And yes, some places may require bonds/deposits. But I would advise you to ignore them and find one that does NOT require deposits.
Q5. Is it easy to find a job?
Work is really EASY to find so long as u put in effort. We hardly put in any effort at all… But just a phone call got us into the nightfill job at The Warehouse. And just an email now got us into Telecom! So no worries. Just get your a** over here and you guys will be fine.
Q6. I am over 30 years old, what should I do?
Enter the country as visitor/tourist. When you get here, go to the immigration office and they’ll sort it out for you. They will give you a temporary work permit. When you find a full-time job, they will further your work permit and give you a working visa.
Q7. Will they employ us on visitor pass?
I’m not sure what this question means but some places employ people without proper work permits. Other places employ only legal workers. It depends where and what kind of job you apply for. But again your work permit should be easy to get if u speak English.
Q8. How much pocket money should we prepare?
300 dollars a week is more than enough to get by inclusive food and accommodation. So you can decide on your own how much you want to bring. Try to budget enough for about 3 weeks of unemployment till you find a decent job which can then cover for all your following expenses.
Pls Note: Those who come in on WHS must be able to provide evidence of minimum 2250 kiwi dollars (if requested at border).
Q9. Can we send money back to KCH from NZ?
Of course you can! ANZ Bank is the agent for NZ currency for most banks in Malaysia. But you can send from any other bank, whichever u like. But I found that u can send NZD over the counter but if u use internet banking, u gotta send in USD. There is a transaction fee of NZ$25 for all transactions <$5000.00.
Tip: Set up all your favourite 3rd party accounts for fund transfer before you come. U cannot receive the TAC on your NZ mobile number.
Q10. How much is the minimum salary? Pay per week or day by day?
Any work in NZ should pay not lower than 10.25. So the lowest pay you get per hour for any job is 10.25. Good news is, they are increasing it to 11.25 starting April. 90% will pay weekly. Some odd ones will pay twice a month. Average pay per week is around 400 to 500.
Q11. Need any qualification?
Again depends on which job you apply for. I think experience is much more important. Having a bit of experience can increase your base pay to $13 per hour.
