Working Holiday Scheme New Zealand

March 26th, 2007 by bunnysuit

Okay. I’ve had so many people asking me the same questions; I decided to post the FAQ here:

Q1. How to be eligible?

You must:

have a Malaysian passport that‘s valid for at least three months after your planned departure from New Zealand

be at least 18 and not more than 30 years old

not bring children with you

hold a return ticket or sufficient funds to purchase such a ticket*

have a minimum of NZ$2,250 available funds to meet your living costs while you’re here

meet health and character requirements (that’s not have TB or criminal records)

not have been approved a visa permit under a Working Holiday Scheme before.

*U are required to hold sufficient funds for the duration of your visit and for the purchase of an outward ticket from NZ. Such evidence may be requested on arrival at the border.

Q2. Where to apply?

Apply online at http://www.immigration.govt.nz

You have to have a credit card to pay for the application fee of NZ$120.00.

Q3. Is it easy to find the place to stay?

Accommodation is EVERYWHERE. The question is how much you’re willing to spend on it. We’re staying at friend’s house. So it’s a lot cheaper. We’re paying 70 kiwi dollars a week. And even the newspapers have a lot of advertisements of people trying to find flat mates. So worse comes to worst, you can crash into backpackers for the first few days until you find a flat/apartment. Backpacking is about 20 to 30 kiwi dollars a night.

Q4. How much is the rental? Need to pay deposit?

On average, a studio (like a room with bed, closet, kitchen, bathroom and wash machine ensuite) is about 120 to 160 kiwi dollars a week. And yes, some places may require bonds/deposits. But I would advise you to ignore them and find one that does NOT require deposits.

Q5. Is it easy to find a job?

Work is really EASY to find so long as u put in effort. We hardly put in any effort at all… But just a phone call got us into the nightfill job at The Warehouse. And just an email now got us into Telecom! So no worries. Just get your a** over here and you guys will be fine.

Q6. I am over 30 years old, what should I do?

Enter the country as visitor/tourist. When you get here, go to the immigration office and they’ll sort it out for you. They will give you a temporary work permit. When you find a full-time job, they will further your work permit and give you a working visa.

Q7. Will they employ us on visitor pass?

I’m not sure what this question means but some places employ people without proper work permits. Other places employ only legal workers. It depends where and what kind of job you apply for. But again your work permit should be easy to get if u speak English.

Q8. How much pocket money should we prepare?

300 dollars a week is more than enough to get by inclusive food and accommodation. So you can decide on your own how much you want to bring. Try to budget enough for about 3 weeks of unemployment till you find a decent job which can then cover for all your following expenses.

Pls Note: Those who come in on WHS must be able to provide evidence of minimum 2250 kiwi dollars (if requested at border).

Q9. Can we send money back to KCH from NZ?

Of course you can! ANZ Bank is the agent for NZ currency for most banks in Malaysia. But you can send from any other bank, whichever u like. But I found that u can send NZD over the counter but if u use internet banking, u gotta send in USD. There is a transaction fee of NZ$25 for all transactions <$5000.00.

Tip: Set up all your favourite 3rd party accounts for fund transfer before you come. U cannot receive the TAC on your NZ mobile number.

Q10. How much is the minimum salary? Pay per week or day by day?

Any work in NZ should pay not lower than 10.25. So the lowest pay you get per hour for any job is 10.25. Good news is, they are increasing it to 11.25 starting April. 90% will pay weekly. Some odd ones will pay twice a month. Average pay per week is around 400 to 500.

Q11. Need any qualification?

Again depends on which job you apply for. I think experience is much more important. Having a bit of experience can increase your base pay to $13 per hour.

It’s been some time since I wrote anything. So here’s something.

I quit my job from the bank. I work about approx 13 days for the month and they pay me a full month salary.

I took a trip to Thailand. Fantastic stuff. My whole trip costed me approx RM2000. My tickets were cheap. A round trip Kch-Bkk-Kch was RM370 (approx) with Air Asia. Take that off my total expenses and you’ll know how much went to shopping.

The first evening did not turn out too great cos it started pouring when i got to Patpong street market. But i had managed to get a cool Gucci pen, though. Set off to see the temples & the buddhas early next morning. Motive? Pictures! Took thousands of them. Please check my albums later.

Got cheated to see the Lucky Buddha. Took some pictures. Met a journalist, Mitchell, who was shocked to learn that my next destination after Bangkok is Pattaya. He asked if i knew Pattaya is a sex capital in Thailand. I was thinking "So what?" until i got there.

But before we move to Pattaya, I just have to tell you this: 1, Grand Palace in Bangkok is a must see. Get onto an express boat & get off at Tha Tien (No.8). You’ll also wanna visit Wat Pho here. Cos the famous Reclining Buddha is just here. 2, After you’re done with the Buddhas, take the express & get off No.5. I don’t remember the name but i’m certain it’s stop No.5. Hop onto a red colour, No.1 bus. It’ll take you to China Town. Seafood, sharks fin, and birds nest haven!

Population of Thailand is 65 million pepople scattered in 76 cities. The few big cities include Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket.

Bangkok is more of a farming city, so u’ll findcoconuts, mangos, and fish farms. You’ll also find mosquitos! hehehehe…

And Pattaya (small city) is more of a factory city. You’ll find foreign factories like Korean, Japanese, and European ones.

This was the place i went next. In pattaya (only from my point of view) there are two things you would not want to miss (i don’t know if anybody would agree with me but heck): 1) The Alcazar Show - where you’ll realize all the he/shes or the she/hes or, as Jacqui would call them, s/hims are far better looking than real shes. 2) Ripley’s - you’ll find this at royal Garden Plaza. I took thousands of pictures here too. So please check the albums later.

As u go along, you’re bound to bump into some drunks who will stare at you, raise a hand, grin, then say to you "karp". And the only sensible thing for you to do is nod back and think "what the hell is karp?".

There was this other guy… I just came out of the masseuse, all oily, relaxed, and nice smelling, and he was like "Hey, are you from Thailand?" and i said No, and he, "You speak a language i don’t understand. What’s that?" and i, "it’s chinese". And he, "you know Saddam Hussein? I’m from there" and at this point i freaked and wanted to run for my life cos who knows he might show me a dynamite or some kind of explosive and say let’s die together! But he, "do you like sex? We could make love in my room, together, forever". This time i really ran for my life and made sure he didn’t follow behind me. Hahahaha…

Suvarnabhumi (pronounced as Suvarnabhum) airport is 140km from South Pattaya. Meaning if your flight (like mine) departs at 10am, you have to leave your hotel at 6.

There are four ways to get to the airport: 1) motorway - the most popular cos is the fastest, 2) skyway - you have to "stop car, pay, stop car, pay" according to Mr.Da my taxi driver, 3) Sukhumvit, 4) Chanburi - lots of heavy vehicles, so traffic might be bit slow.

Again according to Mr.Da, Thailand has 3 seasons: 1) Raining season - now, 2) Winter (cold) - Nov to Jan, 3) Summer - April (very, very hot)

Don Muang Airport (the old one) had been in use for 92 years. They took 44 years to construct Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Mr.Da said, "Thai government not good. Malaysia Mahathir good!". I find him very funny cos at one point he said this (which i didn’t understand), "Yesterday holiday. Government not working. Traffic too much, too much. All the people karp karp karp on the road. Hahahah"

???!?!?!??
